A reason for Giving
‘Tis the month of December and all around OAR,
With a good year behind us, we’re planning for more.
We’ve invested almost $2 million in research so far.
The next year will break that, again raising the bar.
But, when it comes to OAR’s vision and making it real,
It takes more than wishes; hence, this year-end appeal.
As autism’s impact continues to grow,
We continue to learn there’s much more to know.
Today one in 100 is autism’s prevalence rate,
And intervention done early is far better than late.
So what can be done in this season of giving
To help children and adults who, with autism, are living?
Their futures are brighter than ever before
Thanks to meaningful research funded by OAR.
More research is needed. That’s certainly true.
So, the question we ask is, “What can you do?”
While researchers examine their data for clues,
And parents and families need more practical news.
Research is great but it takes time to show
What works and what doesn’t; these things we must know.
Autism varies from child to child, so we’re told.
So treatment for autism does not fit one mold.
Parents thirst to learn what things they can try
Asking with hope, “Do these findings apply?”
OAR helps them in this autism quest
To find science-based answers and what interventions work best.
OAR publishes guides in its Life Journey series
Responding to parents’ informational needs and queries.
These guidebooks offer information, tips, and tools,
For parents at home and teachers in schools,
Helping them see through these special children’s eyes
And unlock their potential, no matter how many tries.
Guidebooks aside, there aren’t sources better
Than OAR’s friendly Web site and monthly newsletter.
The former provides 24/7 access and more,
About autism, treatments, and research funded by OAR.
The OARacle newsletter has now come to be
A clear voice in the autism community since 2003.
It talks about autism in themes that ring true
To all readers regardless of interest or view.
The conference this year was an unbridled success,
With 21 presentations and speakers sure to impress.
300 strong came to listen, inquire, and share views,
And left saying, “Many thanks,” for new information to use.
The latest OAR project deserves special mention,
A program giving military families and autism attention.
In the homes of those who protect our freedom and borders
Are more than 13,000 children with autism spectrum disorders.
Operation Autism launched this November,
A valuable tool for the autism parent-service member.
This Web site aids parents in multiple cases,
Like helping them find answers before changing bases.
It’s the least OAR can do at the end of the day
To say, “Thanks for your service,” in a meaningful way.
Among autism groups there aren’t many more,
Whose passion and focus meet that of OAR.
So, if you are looking for a cause or reason to give
A donation to OAR will improve the lives these kids live.
So give as you can, and wish OAR good luck,
As we work to achieve more bang for the buck.
We say “Thanks” in return, and add with good cheer,
Happy Holidays to all and a Happy New Year!
